Best Photo Studio in Kathmandu: Passport, Portrait, Wedding
Which photo studio in Kathmandu to use for passport and visa photos, bridal and family portraits or a wedding: what to check, where to shoot, and our studio.
"Photo studio" means three different businesses in Kathmandu: counters that print passport and visa photos, portrait studios with backdrops and lights, and wedding studios whose real work happens at venues across the Valley. The best one is the one built for what you need.
This guide explains the difference, what to check before you book, and where couples in the Valley usually shoot.
Finding a photo studio near you in Kathmandu
For passport, visa and ID photos, the nearest studio that prints the same day is usually the right one: search Google Maps for "photo studio", check the opening hours and recent reviews, and go. Tell the studio which document and which country the photo is for, because size, background colour and head position differ between applications, and ask for a digital copy if you will apply online. Wear a plain top that contrasts with a white background, and avoid glasses that reflect the flash.
For portraits, a pre-wedding shoot or a wedding, distance matters much less than the work: it is worth crossing the Valley for a studio whose complete galleries you like, and most of these shoots happen on location anyway.
Visit before you book
A studio visit tells you more than a website. Look at printed albums, not only screens; ask to see complete sets rather than favourites; and notice whether retouching keeps skin looking like skin. For bridal portraits, ask how long hair and makeup usually take and schedule the shoot around it.
Where Kathmandu couples shoot
Patan and Bhaktapur Durbar Squares give old brick, carved windows and temple steps; the Garden of Dreams gives a quiet neoclassical garden in the middle of Thamel; Nagarkot and Dhulikhel give mountain views on clear mornings. Heritage sites charge entry and can restrict professional shoots, so check before you go, and start early to stay ahead of the crowds and the traffic.
Wedding days in the Valley
Kathmandu weddings move between homes, temples, hotel ballrooms and party palaces, often across town in heavy traffic. A wedding studio should plan travel between locations, bring its own lighting for dark halls, and know the order of Hindu and Newar rituals well enough to be in position before each one.
What it costs
Portrait sessions are usually priced by the hour or by the number of edited images; weddings by days, team size, film and album. For weddings, our collections start at NPR 75,000, and the range across everything we offer is NPR 75,000 - NPR 300,000.
Our Kathmandu studio
Wedding Story Nepal’s Kathmandu studio is at Kamalpokhari. It opened in 2017 for Valley weddings — Newar ceremonies, heritage venues around the Durbar Squares, hotel receptions — and shares one team and one phone number, +977-9867335830, with our Butwal studio. Call ahead and we will have albums ready.
