How to plan engagement photography in Nepal: ring ceremonies, tika at home, tilak in Madhesi families, what to photograph, the light, team size and cost.
In Nepal an engagement can be twenty relatives in a sitting room, a hotel hall with three hundred guests, or a tilak ceremony at the groom’s home with the bride’s family. The photographs are often the first the two families have together, and they are easy to get wrong because everyone treats the engagement as the smaller event.
This guide covers what usually happens at each kind of engagement, what to photograph, how the light works indoors and out, how big the team needs to be, and how an engagement shoot differs from a pre-wedding shoot.
What an engagement looks like in Nepal
Most engagements have the same core: the families meet, elders give tika and blessings, rings are exchanged, gifts and sweets change hands, and everyone eats together. Around that core, the size and the order vary widely by family, community and region.
In many Madhesi families the tilak ceremony plays this role: the bride’s family visits the groom’s home, applies tilak to the groom and presents gifts. Newar families and other communities have their own sequence of visits and exchanges. Ask the family, or the priest, to walk the photographer through it before the day.
Engagement shoot or pre-wedding shoot?
An engagement shoot photographs the event: the families, the rituals, the ring exchange and the guests. A pre-wedding shoot is a planned portrait session for the two of you, usually at a location such as a lake, a viewpoint or a heritage square, with outfit changes and no guests.
Many couples combine them: the engagement in the morning or early afternoon, then an hour of couple portraits outdoors as the light softens.
What to photograph
Before the guests arrive: the decoration, the rings, the gifts and the sweets laid out, and both of you getting ready. During the event: the arrival of each family, tika and blessings from the elders, the ring exchange from two angles, reactions from parents and siblings, and the gift exchange.
After the main moment: family groups (write the list in advance), the two families together, the couple with friends, and a few quiet portraits of the two of you away from the crowd.
The ring exchange happens in seconds
The ring exchange is over in less time than it takes to announce it. Tell the photographer when it is coming, keep the space in front of the couple clear of phones, and slow down: hold hands for a breath before and after, so there is a clean frame of both faces and the ring.
Light at home and outdoors
Sitting rooms and halls in Nepal are usually dim, with mixed tube lights and coloured bulbs. The photographer needs flash or LED lighting, used gently enough not to dazzle the elders during tika. Open curtains in the daytime; window light is the most flattering light in the house.
For outdoor portraits, the last hour before sunset gives warm, soft light in every season. Midday sun gives harsh shadows under the eyes; if the event is at noon, plan portraits for later.
How big the team should be
For a home engagement with family only, one photographer for two to four hours is usually enough. For a hotel or party venue with a stage and a few hundred guests, two photographers, or a photographer and a cinematographer, keep the ring exchange covered while someone else follows the guests and the families.
What to wear, and colours that photograph well
Rich, solid colours photograph well against the reds and golds of Nepali décor; very busy prints and neon shades clash. Coordinate the two outfits in tone rather than matching exactly. If you plan a couple session outdoors, bring comfortable shoes and a second, simpler outfit.

Engagement photography checklist
- Share the order of the event and the time of the ring exchange with the photographer.
- Write a family group list and choose one relative to gather people.
