Wedding Photography vs Videography in Nepal: Do You Need Both?
Photos, a film or both? What each captures at a Nepali wedding, what photo-only and photo-and-film packages cost, and how to choose for your budget and rituals.
Almost every couple in Nepal asks the same question when the quotes arrive: do we need a film, or are photographs enough? The honest answer depends on what you want to keep from the day, not on what is fashionable.
This guide sets out what photographs and films each do best at a Nepali wedding, what the difference costs using our own published packages, and when photographs alone are the right choice.
The short answer
If you can afford only one, choose photographs. They become the album on the shelf, the portraits on the wall and the pictures relatives ask for. If you can afford both, add a film for the things a photograph cannot hold: the sound of the band arriving with the janti, your grandmother’s blessing, the laughter during the games, and the bidaai.
What photographs do better
A photograph holds one moment still: the second the sindoor is applied, the expression of a father during kanyadaan, a family of forty in one frame. Photographs print well, fit in an album, and are what most families share and frame.
They also ask less of the day. A photographer can work quickly in a crowded mandap, and a family group takes a minute rather than a staged walk-through.
What a film does better
A film keeps sound and movement: mantras, music, voices, the rhythm of the janti procession, the way a room reacts. For many couples the most watched part of a film is not the ceremony but the elders speaking, the jokes, and the bidaai.
A film is also what relatives abroad remember the wedding by. A three-minute highlight is easy to share; a full-length film is what you watch again years later.
Highlight film or full-length film?
A highlight film is a short edit, usually a few minutes long, set to music and built from the best moments. A full-length film follows the rituals in order, with their sound, and is much longer. Ask which one a package includes and how long each will be, because “wedding video” can mean either.
What the difference costs
Our own packages show the step. Silver at NPR 110,000 is photography only: 8 hours, 2 professional photographers, 400+ edited photos and a photo highlight video. Gold at NPR 160,000 adds a cinematographer and cinematic wedding film, 5 to 7 minutes, with 10 hours of coverage. Platinum at NPR 300,000 covers two full days with 3 photographers and 2 cinematographers and full cinematic wedding film, 15 to 20 minutes. Standalone cinematic coverage starts at NPR 60,000.
When photographs alone are enough
Photographs alone make sense for a short or small ceremony, a court or temple wedding, a tight budget, or a family that simply does not watch videos. Put the money into more hours and a second photographer instead; two people covering both families give a fuller story than one photographer and one videographer stretched across the day.
When to add a film
Add a film when voices matter: elderly grandparents, a family blessing, speeches at the reception. Add one for a multi-day or destination wedding with guests from abroad, or when music and dance are a large part of the celebration.
One team or two?
Booking photos and film from one team usually works better than two separate vendors. One team plans the day together, stays out of each other’s frames and needs fewer people in a crowded mandap. With two vendors, agree beforehand who stands where during the main rituals.
A note on drones
Aerial shots of the venue and the janti look spectacular, but drone flights in Nepal need permission, and areas near airports and many heritage sites restrict them. Ask whether drone footage is included, and whether the team will arrange permission for your venue; if it cannot be flown legally, it should not be in the quote.

Before you decide
- Decide what you most want to keep: prints and an album, or sound and movement.
- Ask whether “video” means a highlight film, a full-length film, or both, and how long each is.
- Compare a photo-only package plus more hours against a photo-and-film package.
- Ask to see a complete film from a wedding like yours, not only a trailer.
- Prefer one team for photos and film, or agree positions between two.
- Confirm whether drone footage is included and permitted at your venue.

Do we need both a wedding photographer and a videographer?+
Not always. Photographs are the priority for most couples. Add a film if voices, music and movement matter to you, or if relatives abroad will watch the wedding afterwards.
Is wedding photography or videography more important?+
For most families, photography: it becomes the album, the framed portraits and the pictures everyone shares. A film is the second priority, and the one many couples later wish they had.
How much does a wedding film cost in Nepal?+
Prices vary by studio, hours and film length. Ours: standalone cinematic coverage from NPR 60,000; photography and film together in the Gold package at NPR 160,000; and two full days of photo and film in Platinum at NPR 300,000.
What is the difference between a highlight film and a full film?+

Is it cheaper to book photos and video together?+
Usually. With us, Gold (NPR 160,000) gives photography and a film for less than Silver (NPR 110,000) plus standalone film (from NPR 60,000).
Can one person do both photos and video?+
Not well at a Nepali wedding. The main rituals happen once, and a camera cannot take a still and film a steady shot at the same moment. Book separate people for each.
Do we need drone footage?+
It is optional. It shows the venue and the procession beautifully, but it needs permission and is restricted near airports and many heritage sites. Ask whether it is included and permitted at your venue.
How long is a Nepali wedding film?+
It depends on the package. Ours: Gold, cinematic wedding film, 5 to 7 minutes; Platinum, full cinematic wedding film, 15 to 20 minutes, plus a shorter highlight reel.
