A maternity session is a short window. The bump is photogenic for a matter of weeks, and by the time most families think about booking, that window is closing. This page explains when to shoot, what a session actually involves, and what it costs — so you can decide quickly rather than research for a month.

We photograph maternity sessions in our Kathmandu and Butwal studios and on location across Nepal. The same team that shoots our weddings shoots these — same cameras, same lighting kit, same retouching standard. A maternity shoot is not a side service we outsource.

When to book your maternity session

Book the date around week 20 and shoot in the 28–34 week window. Studio availability in Kathmandu tightens sharply during the November–February wedding season, when our team is committed to weddings most weekends — if your window falls in those months, book earlier and expect a weekday slot.

WhenWhat it means
Week 18–20Book the date. Your due date is confirmed and the window is predictable.
Week 24–28Ideal window if you are carrying twins, or if you have been advised to expect an early delivery.
Week 28–34The standard session window. The bump is clearly defined and standing for two hours is still comfortable.
Week 35+Still possible, but we shorten the session, shoot mostly seated, and keep a reserve date in case the baby arrives first.

How the session works

  1. A short planning call

We talk through location (studio or outdoor), what you want to wear, whether your partner and older children are joining, and any physical limits — swelling, back pain, or a doctor’s advice to avoid standing for long. This call shapes the entire session, so it is not a formality.

  2. Wardrobe and styling

We send a wardrobe guide before the shoot. Fitted fabrics read better than loose ones because they define the bump rather than hide it. Bring two outfits — typically one fitted and one flowing — plus anything with personal meaning: a sari, a partner’s shirt, the first pair of baby shoes.

  3. The session itself

Two hours, paced with breaks. We pose actively rather than leaving you to work it out — most people have never been photographed like this and standing unguided in front of a camera is uncomfortable. Seated and leaning poses are used liberally so you are not on your feet for two hours.

  4. Selection and retouching

You receive a private online gallery of the full take. We retouch a minimum of 25 images — skin tone, colour, distractions in the frame. We do not slim the body or reshape the bump unless you specifically ask; that is the one edit that most often disappoints people later.

Practical guidance most maternity guides leave out

These are the things that actually determine whether you like your maternity photographs, drawn from shooting them in Nepali homes, studios and outdoor locations.

Shoot in the morning if you are outdoors

Swelling in the feet and ankles builds through the day, and Kathmandu and Butwal both get harsh overhead light and haze by midday. A 7–9am start solves both problems at once. Late afternoon is the second-best option.

Decide about the bare bump before the day, not during it

Exposed-bump images are common in international maternity photography and much less common in Nepali family albums, where images are frequently shared with extended family. There is no correct answer — but deciding at the studio, half-changed, means deciding under pressure. Tell us in the planning call and we will shoot accordingly.

Include your partner and older children in the plan

Partner and sibling portraits are included in the session at no extra cost. If an older child is joining, schedule the session near their normal good hours and expect them in the first 30 minutes, before their patience runs out. We shoot the child-inclusive frames first for exactly this reason.

Outdoor locations need a permission check

Several popular Kathmandu Valley locations — heritage courtyards, some temple grounds, private gardens — require permission or a fee for a photography session, and a few prohibit tripods. We check and arrange this before the date rather than negotiating at the gate with a pregnant client waiting.

Book the newborn session at the same time

Newborn photography has a 5–14 day window after birth that cannot be moved. Families who wait until the baby arrives to start looking routinely miss it. Reserving both dates together is the single most useful thing you can do, and we hold the newborn slot flexibly against the actual delivery date.

Where we shoot maternity sessions

Studio sessions run at our Kamalpokhari studio in Kathmandu and our Butwal-10 Ramnagar studio, both heated and private. Outdoor sessions are common at Garden of Dreams and the Shivapuri foothills near Kathmandu, the Phewa lakeside in Pokhara, and the riverside and Manigram gardens around Butwal. We also shoot at home, which suits families who would rather not travel late in pregnancy — we bring lighting and work with the space you have.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a maternity photoshoot cost in Nepal?+

Our maternity sessions start at NPR 12,000 for a two-hour studio or outdoor session with 2 outfit changes, 25+ retouched high-resolution images and a private online gallery. Partner and sibling portraits are included. Travel outside Kathmandu or Butwal is charged at NPR 5,000–15,000 depending on distance.

What should I wear for a maternity photoshoot?+

Bring two outfits: one fitted piece that defines the bump, and one flowing piece for movement. Solid colours photograph better than busy prints. A sari or traditional dress works beautifully and is a common choice for Nepali families. We send a full wardrobe guide once your date is booked, and we keep a few maternity gowns at the studio you are welcome to use.

Can my husband and children be in the maternity photos?+

Yes, and it costs nothing extra. Partner and sibling portraits are part of every maternity session. If a young child is joining, we photograph those frames in the first half hour while their patience holds.

Is it too late to book at 36 weeks?+

Not necessarily, but it is tight. We can usually shoot at 35–37 weeks with a shorter, mostly seated session. Book immediately rather than waiting, and be aware that if the baby arrives before the date we will move the booking to a newborn session rather than cancelling it.

Do you do maternity photography outside Kathmandu?+

Yes. We have studios in Kathmandu and Butwal and travel across Nepal, including Pokhara, Chitwan, Bhairahawa, Dharan, Biratnagar and Nepalgunj. Travel outside our home districts is charged at NPR 5,000–15,000 depending on distance.

How long until we get the photos?+

A short preview within 7 days and the full retouched gallery within 2–4 weeks. If your due date is close we prioritise the edit so you have the images before the baby arrives.
