How to choose a wedding photographer in Nepal: what the job involves, rituals and team size, what to ask, what it costs and when to book in wedding season.
Your wedding photographer is the one supplier whose work you will look at for the rest of your life, and in Nepal the job is harder than it looks: two or three days, two family homes, rituals that happen once at the priest’s sait, crowded courtyards and dark reception halls.
This guide covers what to look for, which questions to ask, what drives the price, and when to book. It is written by a wedding studio, so where it describes our own work it says so.
What the job involves in Nepal
A Nepali wedding is rarely one event. Haldi and mehendi happen at home, the janti arrives with a band, swayamvar, kanyadaan and sindoor follow at the priest’s sait, and the bidaai and reception close the day — often across two locations and in low light. A photographer who knows the order is already in position; one who does not is always a moment behind.
Team size
One photographer cannot be at the mandap and in the family courtyard at the same time. For most Nepali weddings, plan for at least two photographers, and add one or two cinematographers if you want a film. For multi-day weddings, ask whether the same people cover every day — continuity is what makes the album read as one story.
Portfolio and reviews
Ask for two or three complete galleries from recent weddings like yours: similar ceremony, similar venue, similar guest count. Check that faces are sharp and well exposed from the morning to the reception. Then read reviews on Google or Facebook, sorted by newest, and look for comments about punctuality, conduct during the rituals and delivery time.
What to put in the contract
The written agreement should name the lead photographer and the team, the dates, hours and locations, the number of edited photographs, the film and album, the delivery dates, travel and overtime, the advance and payment schedule, cancellation and rescheduling terms, and how long the studio keeps your files.
What it costs
Price follows days of coverage, team size, film, album and travel. Compare quotes line by line rather than headline figures, because package names such as "Gold" or "Premium" mean something different at every studio. Our own wedding collections start at NPR 75,000, and the range across everything we offer is NPR 75,000 - NPR 300,000.
When to book
Weddings follow auspicious dates worked out from the Nepali calendar, so demand bunches into Mangsir, Magh, Falgun, Baisakh and Jestha. Get the sait from your priest first, then book the photographer: for those months, two to three months ahead is the minimum, and popular dates go sooner.
